Seems like I often find myself telling version 1 to impress others. I served in Latin America, and love to tell the crazy mission stories to impress people, like I was some kind of Elder Indiana Jones who had these amazing adventures every day. True stories, but they are version 1 stories. The bus wrecks, the climbing of tall mountains only to find indigenous people who didn't even speak spanish, the casting out of devils, all the gunpoint assaults, etc etc.

You are right though...the more impressive stories are the personal, spiritual, humbling stories. Those are the experiences where I really grew. Thanks for reminding me of that Shawn.

But can I still be known as the Indiana Jones of the blog?

Shawn, great post. Made me miss my mission again. I know what you mean about keeping your spiritual cards close to your vest. Here's to recommitting to revealing our hands more often.

Shawn,

What a fabulous, moving post. Thank you. I think about how true this is for my entire Church experience: there is a version 1 and a version 2. The moments when someone drops the F bomb from the pulpit during a testimony meeting or tells an incredibly crass story in a Sunday school class. And others in which we receive a transitory witness of Truth so powerful and real that doubt is momentarily entirely displaced. So great to be reminded that, while it's always fun to hear someone swear from the pulpit, our religious experience is defined by version 2.
